Day 11
Today, we had the chance to use the Google Glasses again. We enjoyed getting this chance again today. We then experienced the snack shop. We were able to buy treats and a few knik-knacks. To end the day, we were able to watch the Sing it, Act it, Shake it play. This is a class that students will have the opportunity to take next year.
Day 10
Today, we did did a variety of activities. We finished learning about the six systems on Friday, so today was a day of using the information we learned to see how our systems work. We started our time together with five centers. In one center, we learned that the heart can pump 1.3 gallons of blood in one minute. We tried moving one gallon of water from one bucket to another in one minute. This was a difficult task for us to complete. In another center, students built a contraption to blow a ball. This helped us to use our respiratory system. In the last three centers, we worked on a word find, used play-do to build the different systems, and did a maze activity. After our centers, we used Google Glasses to take a virtual field trip to see the different body systems.
Day 9
Today, we learned about the nervous system. We learned that there are four parts to our brain; the cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem and corpus collosum. We also learned that the brain and nerves are the boss of our body. This system plays a role in everything we do at any given moment.
Day 8
Today was our field trip! We had a lot of fun at St. Croix State Park. We started the day with a presentation on pollinators. During this time, we learned about the importance of pollinators, what foods need pollination, and what insects are pollinators. We then took time to catch insects to have a closer look. After lunch, we had the opportunity to learn about fire fighting from a state park forester (a student's dad). To finish off the day, we worked on a nature scavenger hunt.
Day 7
Today, we learned all about the circulatory system. We learned that it takes 8 seconds for our blood to travel from our heart to our brain and back. We also learned that arteries carry oxygen rich blood to the body, while veins care oxygen depleted blood back to the heart. The blood in the veins go back to the lungs to get more oxygen.
Extended Day Plans
On Thursday, June 21st, on our extended day, we will be going to Saint Croix State Park. We will be taking part in an presentation on pollination, doing some hiking, and possibly a scavenger hunt. We look forward to spending the day outside doing activities to promote healthy lifestyles.
For now a few things to keep in mind:
* A lunch is needed this day
* Students will arrive home two hours later on this day
* Have your child wear their Project SEEK shirts, comfortable shorts, and TENNIS SHOES
* Please send sunscreen also, as we will be outside

Day 6
Today, we learned about the digestive system. We learned that once food makes its way to the stomach, gastric juices work to break the food down. It takes about three hours for food to break down in the stomach. From here, the food spends about four hours in the small intestines, then makes its way to the large intestines. We also learned that the small intestine is 22 feet long and the large intestine is about 5 feet long. We were amazed with the length of the intestine and how it fits into our bodies.
Day 5
Today we learned about the respiratory system. We learned that an adult breathes in 2,100 gallons of oxygen every day. We also learned that the left lung is smaller than the right, this makes room for the heart. We did a quick activities for this system. One was checking our breathing rate, we started by counting how many breathes we took in in one minute. Then we did an activity to get our heart rate up and counted the number of breathes we took in one minute again. We found that our breath count went up after being active. This helped us to understand that the more active we are the more oxygen our body needs. For our model for this system, we made lungs. This model helped us to visualize the windpipe and lungs. We had fun making ourl ung models and trying them out.
Day 4
To finish learning about the muscular system, we did two activities. The first activity showed us how our muscles get tired when doing an activity a number of times. For this activity, we used stress balls. We squeezed the ball for thirty seconds then rested for ten seconds. We repeated this four times, by the end our arms were very tired. The second activity we did today was build our hand model. This model shows how the muscles in the hand move our fingers.
Day 3
We finished our bone model today. Then we moved on to learning about the muscular system. We learned that our bodies have more than 630 muscles and that it takes more muscles to frown than smile. We also learned that we have three different kinds of muscles; cardiac, skeletal, and smooth. Some muscles are involuntary, we don't think about that muscle moving, such as the heart. While other muscles are voluntary, for these muscles, the brain sends a message to the muscle to move.
Tomorrow, we will finish learning about the muscular system and complete our model for this system.

Day 2
We started learning about the skeletal system today. A few things we learned were the number of bones a baby and an adult have, the largest and smallest bones in the body, and the strongest bone in the human body. We started making a model of a bone, we will finish it tomorrow morning. As we are building the bone model, we are learning about the different layers that make up the bone.
Day 1
Today, was a day of introductions and expectations, along with some fun. We learned a little about our classmates this morning. By the end of our day together, everyone was feeling more comfortable and excited about what the next two weeks will bring.
We prepared our Doctor's Bags and Notebooks today. We will use these two items everyday to collect information on each system. Tomorrow, we will begin learning about the skeletal system.

Welcome to How it works: Your Body
During our twelve days together, we will learn about six body systems. We will start with the skeletal system, then we will learn about the muscular system. The other systems we will learn about are respiratory, digestive, circulatory, and finally the nervous system. Our learning will include activities, discussions, reading, and hands-on projects.
Please check this site on a regular basis, we will update with what we learned and pictures of the activities and projects we complete.
