Day 11 - June 26 - Tuesday - Open House Day
Tonight is Open House from 5-7pm at "SEEKasaurus"! We joined a few other SEEK classes to watch _Geology Rocks_, performed by the Sing it, Act it, Shake it class. Our class was a fantastic audience, and we had fun watching this musical! We even got our picture taken with the cast!
T-Rex t-shirts: Each student chose from 3 Tie Dye colors to "spritz" their T-Rex t-shirt. Since it was raining, we did this project inside. Students created very unique designs, and after peeling off the contact paper at open House the T-Rex t-shirts looked awesome!
Dino Trivia: "In how many states have dinosaur fossils been found?" Smart guesses ranged between 3 and 47 states. Gabe was closest with his guess of 35, and he earned a pencil.
Show & Tell -- Day 8: Ethan shared the Stegosaurus shirt he was wearing. Thanks for sharing Ethan!
The class will display their Dino Dioramas, Fossil "bones", Rock (dino egg) Geodes, T-Rex t-shirts, Cast Fossil, Impression Fossil, Paleontologist Folder, and items in the hallway at Open House tonight. It was fantastic to meet parents and family members tonight! Thank you for coming out and enjoying this evening!

Reminders:
- Open House is tomorrow from 5-7PM. Please come check out everything your child has made.
- Strike It Rich will be selling food tomorrow night (taco in a bag, hot dogs, ice cream, etc.) in the cafeteria.
- Wednesday is the last day of Project Seek.
Day 10 - June 25 - Monday - Pachycephalosaurus Day
Dino Superstar #7 was Pachycephalosaurus! We discovered that it's dome head shape was 10 inches thick. We learned that it lived in the late Cretaceous Period and was featured in the Jurassic Park movie.
A few kiddos worked to finish Fossil Dig #2. Just like a paleontologist may dig and not find all the dino bones, at least one arm or leg seemed to be missing from a Dino dig or two. The fossil bones were very small, so this proved to be a challenge!
We worked on Dinosaur Report Pages, and learned facts about dinosaurs we have studied and other dinosaurs as well. What does its name mean and how did it move were just a few of the questions the students needed to research in Dino books and/or Dino trivia cards. Great job!
After snack and a short recess (to burn off some energy!), we made a Cast Fossil. Step #1 was to wrap a small dinosaur figurine completely in tinfoil. Step #2 was to take a plaster wrap, wet it, and shape it around the "tinfoil dino". These steps are just what a Paleontologist would do on a much larger (and smaller scale).
Show & Tell - Day 7: Sophie shared a Lego figure that reminded her of Velociraptor. She also shared a rock that looked like a Dinosaur fossil. Thanks for sharing Sophie!

Day 9 - June 22 - Friday - Stegosaurus Day
Dino Superstar #6 was Stegosaurus! We discovered that this herbivore had 17 plates on his back that could have been used as solar panels. He also had 4 spikes on his tail measuring over a meter (4 ft.) in length.
Dino Dioramas --- Day 4: Finishing touches and dinosaurs were put in our Dino Dioramas. They are now ready for display on Open House night on Tuesday, June 26, from 5-7pm.
After snack, we joined other classes for a short outside recess. Students were very active --- we needed to run off some energy!
Fossil "Skeletons": Over the past few days, ambitious scientists have been taken on the challenge of assembling the fossil skeletons of T-Rex, Velociraptor, 4D Brachiosaurus, and small dino puzzles.
Imprint Fossils: Today we added brown paint in a brush technique, turning our Imprint Fossils into prehistoric, million year old fossils. Kiddos did a great job!
Fossil Dig #2: Junior paleontologists partnered up to tackle Fossil Dig #2. They discovered it took patience and careful excavating to find the small dinosaur fossil bones. "I found the first bone!" was exciting to hear!

DAY 8 - June 21 - Thursday - Extended day
Today the Dinosaurs! class got to experience a virtual Field Trip to more than one museum with dinosaur fossils. Using Google Glasses proved to be both an adventure and a challenge. We made sure kiddos sat on the floor so they wouldn't get dizzy! :)
Dino Time: We really enjoyed some extended Dino Time today in Dinosaurs --- students are very creative!
Dino Dioramas - Day 3: Inspired by new ideas (eggs, nests, bones) and other materials, we added dinosaurs and put some of the finish touches on our Dino Dioramas.
Show & Tell - Day 6: Blake shared his Dinosaur trivia cards, Kaydence shared her Apatosaurus Dinosaur figurine given to her by Grandma, and Parker shared his unique Dinosaur "toy" that could change shapes and tell about dinosaurs. Thanks for sharing Blake, Kaydence and Parker!

please have your child bring a bag lunch tomorrow. *** We will be using 'Google Glasses' to go on a virtual field Trip as part of our extended day ***
Day 7 - June 20 - Wednesday - Velociraptor Day
Today our Dino Superstar #5 was Velociraptor! We learned this meat-eating dinosaur was only 6 ft. long and 3 ft.high. Velociraptors had feathers, sharp teeth, and one VERY sharp claw on each foot. We watched a few short educational videos and did a great job sharing 2 facts from our Dino-A-Day packet!
Dino Dioramas - Day 2 --- Glue, colored paper, glitter (for volcanos) and imagination was used to create the backdrop of the Mesozoic Era of dinosaurs in our shoeboxes. Friday we will continue to work on the dioramas.
Impression fossils --- After we talked about what an Impression Fossil is, each student was asked to take a piece of Model Magic, press it into a cookie/disc shape & use different parts of dinosaurs to make track or skin impressions.
Puzzles --- Kiddos have been working on T-Rex and Velociraptor dino puzzles. While one group finishes the T-Rex fossil puzzle another group has a more challenging time putting the another 'skeleton' together.
Show & Tell - Day 5: Miles shared his shirt, which had a T-Rex riding a bicycle. "Unstoppable", his t-shirt read. Thanks for Sharing Miles!

DAY 6 - JUNE 19 - Tuesday - Bizzare DINOS
Today was Fossil Day! We learned the 4 steps of a paleontologist's "Dino Dig" with volunteers reading each step. If you ask your child, they should be able to tell you 1. Dig it 2. Map it 3. Wrap it 4. Move it! It even sounds like a dino rap! Students had the opportunity to do their 1st fossil dig named "I 'Dig' Dinosaurs". Each students received 2 tools (toothpicks), and the ground with fossils (chocolate chip cookie). Each junior paleontologist needed to be very careful, and some kiddos discovered it was hard not to break the ground, the fossils, and /or the "tool" used for the dig. It was fun to do an edible did. Each fossil was worth "$25".
We learned that Dracorex is a "dinosaur" with an X-Factor --- a flat skull and head butting seemed to be his specialty!
We "met" Pete the Paleontologist from Colorado and talked about his fossil dig tools. He looks a lot like Flat Stanley. Because he was missing a few items, students added things like sunscreen, maps, and pizza. How smart! Pete might get hungry while he is digging up fossils.
Show & Tell - Day 4: Eli shared a small rock that his grandparents found in Hawaii. He thought it looked like a T-Rex skull and the class did too. Thanks for sharing Eli!

day 5 - MOnday - JUne 18 - ANKYLOsaurus
It was a busy day in Dinosaurs! Our Dino Superstar #4 was Ankylosaurus - we discovered this dinosaur wore heavy armor all over his body, including his eyelids. Volunteers were chosen to read and show signs that explain 4 vocabulary words: 1. Museum 2. Fossils 3. Theory 4. Pterosaurs.
Dino Geodes/Eggs: Team T-Rex & Team Triceratops measured and mixed ingredients to make our Dino Geode/Egg mixture. Students carefully molded/shaped the mixture around small dinosaurs. When they dry, students can excavate the dinos at home with tools and parent permission! :)
Show & Tell - Day 3
Dylan showed the class a special dinosaur book that he got for Christmas a couple years ago. He even showed us a dino or two that were his favorite. Thanks for sharing Dylan!

Day 4 - June 15 - friday - diplodocus Day
It's Diplodocus Day at Dinosaurs! Today we learned about Dino Superstar #3 --- Diplodocus! We learned their teeth are made for eating plants and trees (conifers), and their nickname is the "Stripper". They can grow to be 80-90 feet long (the length of an airplane or 2=3 buses) and have a tail that can really whip.
Students created a Diplodocus using 4 "pipe cleaners", 2 long & 2 short. It was a challenge to wrap the pipe cleaners and make this dinosaur.
A D-I-P-L-O-D-O-C-U-S scavenger hunt gave students a chance to explore and work as a team to solve the dinosaur letters and spell the dinosaur name correctly, just like paleontologists try to solve dino mysteries.
Before snack, we measured the length of dinos by laying down 1 ft. paper strips on the floor. 30 ft = Iguanodon, Stegosaurus, Triceratops. 40 ft = T-Rex. Taking turns, the class laid next to the paper strips, and we discovered our class measured longer than a T-Rex!
Dino Trivia --- "What dinosaur has 0 eggs that have been discovered by scientists?" 9 students predicted T-Rex eggs, and they were correct! Other students predicted Triceratops or Diplodocus.
A "Rip Dino" was created with on white paper, paper scraps & a glue stick (Rule --- no scissors) Some students even ripped white paper into dino teeth. Great creativity!
Dino Show & Tell --- Day 2
Gabe brought a cool T-Rex figurine that he excavated from a dino kit. Thanks for sharing Gabe!

Day 3 - June 14 - Thursday - Triceratops Day
Day 2 - June 13 - Wednesday - T-rex Day
It's T-Rex Day (Dino Superstar #1)! We learned about this epic dinosaur and wrote 2 amazing facts about the "King of the Cretaceous"! Students decorated their very own crowns with T-Rex "fossil teeth", markers, glitter, stickers, and other cook thinks to model at snack time -- each crown was so creative and unique! The class enjoyed eating "dinosaur meat" (a.k.a. beef jerky) with no hands, experiencing what it would be like to eat like T-Rex. Most students found this to be a tasty treat!
Dino Trivia #2 --- "How many years did a T-Rex live? (It's lifespan) Our class thought T-Rex lived anywhere between 3 to 9,999,000 years old! We were surprised to learn that T-Rex only lived to the age of 30. Miles made the closest prediction with 25 years.
While referring to a picture of a T-Rex fossil from the American Museum of Natural History, the junior paleontologists created their own T-Rex or dino fossils using q-tips, glue and black paper. Wow, these students were thinking like scientists while using imagination and creativity.
We put our shoes (30 including mine) inside a 3 1/2" T-Rex footprint. We discovered they did not quite fill up the T-Rex footprint and we needed more.

Day 1 - June 12 - Tuesday - Dino Tooth Day
A great 1st Day in Dinosaurs! We voted with our bodies, and we learned about dinosaurs and the different teeth they have --- Plant eaters had flat teeth and Meat eaters had sharp pointed teeth. Students created their own "fossil teeth" using Model Magic and a sprinkle of sand. They wrote creative stories "If I had a Pet Dinosaur...". Vivid imaginations!
Science Experiment #1: Students tried dissolving capsules in warm water and predicted what would "hatch". We discovered some dinosaurs did not dissolve as much, since the water wasn't hot enough. We talked about how scientists try different things when an experiment doesn't turn out just right. |
